DSC for GST, MCA & Income Tax Filing
Every year, thousands of Indian businesses face the same problem: they log in to the GST portal, the MCA21 portal, or the Income Tax e-filing website to submit a critical form — and they cannot proceed. The reason? Their Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) has expired. Or worse, they never had one.
If you are a small business owner, a Chartered Accountant, or a professional handling company filings, this guide is written specifically for you. We break down exactly why DSC is mandatory, where it is required, and how you can get yours today — quickly, affordably, and without any paperwork hassle.
What is a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)?
A Digital Signature Certificate is an electronic document that proves your identity online — the way your physical signature proves it on paper. The key difference is that a DSC is legally binding, tamper-proof, and accepted by every major Indian government portal.
When you digitally sign a form or document, the DSC attaches a unique encrypted seal to it. Any attempt to alter the document afterwards is immediately detected. This makes it far more secure than a handwritten signature.

Why DSC matters in 3 words: Authentication · Integrity · Compliance |
|
Authentication — proves you are who you claim to be on the portal |
|
Integrity — ensures the document was not changed after signing |
|
Compliance — required by law for dozens of government filings |
Where is DSC Mandatory in India? — The 3 Most Important Portals
1. DSC for GST Registration and Filing
The GST portal requires a valid Class 3 DSC for company and LLP registrations, as well as for filing certain GST returns. Without a DSC, your GST application will be stuck at the verification stage and cannot be submitted. This is one of the most common reasons business registration gets delayed unnecessarily.
Individual proprietors can use the Aadhaar-based e-signature option, but companies, LLPs, and firms must use DSC — there is no alternative.
2. DSC for MCA Company and LLP Registration
The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA21) portal is where companies and Limited Liability Partnerships are registered in India. Every director or designated partner must hold a valid DSC to sign the e-forms required for incorporation.
Using DSC for GST, MCA & Income Tax Filing is not optional for company directors — it is a legal requirement under the Companies Act, 2013. Any professional helping clients with company registration must ensure every director has a DSC before beginning the process.
3. DSC for Income Tax Filing
Under the Income Tax Act, companies, LLPs, and individuals whose accounts require an audit must file their Income Tax Return (ITR) using a DSC on the e-filing portal. The digital signature confirms that the return was filed by the authorised person and has not been altered.
For Chartered Accountants who file on behalf of clients, a personal Class 3 DSC is also required to upload audit reports such as Form 3CA, 3CB, and 3CD on the Income Tax portal.

Other places where DSC is required |
|
DGFT portal — Import Export Code (IEC) applications and export licensing |
|
E-Tendering portals — CPPP, GeM, and state government tender submissions |
|
EPFO and ESIC — employer compliance registration and submissions |
|
Trademark and Patent applications — IP India portal submissions |
DSC Validity, Renewal, and Expiry
A DSC is issued for a validity of either 1, 2 or 3 years. Once it expires, it cannot be used to sign any document on a government portal. We strongly recommend setting a reminder 30 days before your expiry date.
Important: An expired DSC during GST return season or company filing deadlines can result in penalties and rejected submissions. Renewal is simple and can be done online through our portal in under an hour.
Frequently Asked Questions
|
Q1: Is DSC mandatory for all GST return filers in India? DSC is mandatory for companies and LLPs registering under GST and for certain GST return submissions. Individual proprietors and partnership firms can use Aadhaar-based e-sign as an alternative. When in doubt, consult your CA — or contact us and we will advise you on the right certificate for your situation. |
|
Q2: How long does it take to get a DSC from your partner? In most cases, your DSC is issued within 30 minutes of completing the video verification step. The entire process is online and requires no physical visit. Urgent applications processed the same business day. |
|
Q3: Can one DSC be used for GST, MCA, and Income Tax at the same time? Yes — a single Class 3 DSC can be used across all major government portals including GST, MCA21, Income Tax, EPFO, and e-Tendering portals. You do not need separate certificates for each portal. This makes it extremely cost-effective for business owners and professionals. |
|
Q4: What documents are required to get a DSC? For individuals and company directors: Aadhaar Card and PAN Card are the primary documents required. For companies with foreign directors or special cases, additional documents may be needed. Contact us and we will send you a personalised checklist within minutes. |
